The claim of reduced human suffering that Modernity makes is certainly true, and a great many humans, especially economically privileged ones, can now live without having to endure significant pain or even discomfort. At the same time, there is more human suffering in the world than ever before – the pain of poverty, hunger, war, dispossession, the pain of loss, anger, anxiety, fear and need are all multiplied by billions, washing into every corner of the world, destroying its substrate and leaving no part untouched. Modernity has indeed turned out to be a pharmakon, both medicine and poison, but we’re hooked on it, doomed to continually destroy and remake our lives until we run out of raw materials.
